Wardrobe Remix

Wardrobe Remix is pretty much the best site on the internet. I like to do MyStyleDiary to highlight the awesome personal style people have, but Wardrobe Remix is far superior. Wardrobe Remix is the younger, diy-punk version of MyStyleDiary where the photography is way more awesome. I feel so inspired right now.

Sh-sh-shopping: Part Three

I have shopped obscenely this week. Its as if I have a large emotional void that needs to be filled with fabric. (*cough* my best friend is at college in the U.S. It sucks.) As you probably induced, this is another post detailing the fashionable adventures of my debit card. I went to Kingston yesterday, where the Value Villages are large and the American Apparels actually exist. Despite being surrounded by hoardes of nice stuff, I left Value Village empty-handed for the first time ever. I even saw a brown/green plaid skirt, dainty cream-coloured vintage pumps, outrageous silver flats and black bondage-esque pointy flats with zippers all over them. I just didn't feel like spending money on any of them, so I left saddened by my miserly habits.

Then I went to American Apparel, where my miserly tendencies seemed to vanish. I must have been compensating for my lack of thrift finds because I bought this delicious gray cardigan for $42. I already have a gray cardigan... Am I even sane?

I've been lusting after these short-alls since the last time I was at American Apparel, so that justifies my spending $50 on them.

Then I just bought a really baggy black racerback top that I'll wear as a tunic. Or something to that avail.

You probably shouldn't expect a "stuff I bought" post for a while. My materialistic tendencies have (hopefully) been satiated for the next month.

Ferragamo, I love you.

Alright, my new-old Ferragamo pumps may be stuck in the 80s but I most definitely, am not. All it takes is the right outfit to make them thoroughly and acceptably modern. So, I have created three outfits to showcase how naff shoes can be cool. I swear!

I decided to mix fashion eras for this outfit. The shoes are very 80s, the skirt is either 80s or 90s and the shirt is new but the lace/high collar detail is distinctly Victorian. Or perhaps Edwardian? Actually, I have no idea what era inspired my shirt, but it sure as hell wasn't after 1920. I'm no fashion historian.

The connecting vein in this outfit was colour. The shoes, shorts and logo are all a similar cream colour. It's a Hawksley Workman t-shirt, by the way. He's a fabulous musician, you should check him out.

The gold buttons match the gold detail on the shoes. I wanted to create an outfit that was more classy, less contemporary. I feel much older than 17 when I wear this modest black skirt.

I did a decent job modernizing the shoes, no?

Sh-sh-shopping: Part Two

I went to good ol' St. Vincent de Pauls yesterday and brought back a pretty good haul for only $10.

1. Salvatore Ferragamo pumps for $3!! They are a half size too big and a bit 1980s-centric but heel pads and the right outfit combination will fix both problems. I am so proud of myself. Ferra-friggin'-gamo for $3!

2. White Lacoste Polo for $2! I don't even like Lacoste polos very much at all, but the idea of buying something so coveted for so goddamn cheap was just irresistable. So when snobby girls are comparing how much their Lacoste cost, I can butt in and make them all jealous. The polo is really short, almost a belly top. But if I tuck it into a high-waisted skirt such as this one, nobody will have to know.


3. A green sweater for $5. It was pricey (for a thrift find) because it still had its tag. I didn't recognize the label and it was too wrinkly to take a picture of. You'll just have to trust me that its nice.

Sh-sh-shopping: Part One

I went to good ol' Value Village yesterday and left with some pretty choice stuff.

I got this neat white bodysuit, because I've been griping about a shirt to wear with my high-waisted pants. You see, most of my shirts are too baggy to tuck in so the bodysuit is a geeky, but perfect solution. The scalloped detail on the v-neck makes in interesting.

This shirt may not look special, but it is awesome! The fabric is light, soft and perfectly worn-in. I don't know what the little symbol is, but a little mystery never hurts.

I also went to Payless Shoe Source and bought this pair of patent peep-toes. I "needed" a pair of peep-toes and thought the stubby 80s style heel was cute, so I caved and bought them.

Payless Shoe Source has a lot going on for them these days. Usually I associate Payless with badly made fake Converse All-Stars/Vans slip-ons, but not anymore. There are at least three pairs of boots/shoes I wanted to buy but could only see the peep-toes in store. Honestly, its worth a look!

Happy Hour

Sometimes we all need a little reminder that fashion is supposed to be outrageous and fun, not outrageously snobby. Even if candy raving isn't your speed, its something to keep in mind. This picture just makes me smile. In fact, the girls' description of this portrait on Hel-Looks claims they "want to make people happy" through their clothes. I think its working... Can you feel the sunshine?

S/S 08 Collections of Note

HIT: Catherine Malandrino's ethereal spring collection was dead on. It apears to be inspired by fairy-dances at a garden paty. A little wacky, but fine with me when the end result is so beautiful.

MISS: House of Holland at Fashion East. It was nice to see Henry Holland do away with his tired slogan t-shirts (knockoffs can do that...), but this is actually nauseating. Is it hippie? Rave? Punk? No accurate subculture can be used to describe
this. The word "terrible" should suffice.

HIT: McQ does monochrome. Boys who dress like elves are just so adorable to me! Hopefully this outfit turns up on Face Hunter soon.

MISS: Rachel Roy. Are these actually metallic gauchos? Just because your husband is a hip hop mogul does not gives you license to design atrocities such as this.

Hit: Temperley. Temperley is always the go-to brand for anything beautiful. Of course, this jumper is no exception. The black and cream colour scheme is gorgeous. The whole collection is gorgeous, actually.

Luella + Enid

Luella's S/S 08 collection was inspired by Enid (Thora Birch) from Ghost World, who is everything I aspire to be in a human being. That makes the collection the sartorial personification of my idol. I'm surprised not more people are raving about Luella, seeing as it the best collection EVER. (In my self-important opinion)
I love the Batgirl shirt and floral skirt. Library geek-chic for life!

The mask was so inspired by the part in the movie when Enid goes to the sex shop with Seymour and buys the Batgirl mask. The grey cardigan and plaid pencil skirt are pure perfection. Alliteration, much?

Okay, this is ALL about Batgirl! The jacket is so much fun, I love it!

Luella S/S 08 is utter proof that Ghost World is the most fashionable movie ever made. I have so much respect for Luella right now it is oozing out of every pore in my body. I am freaking out I love this so much!

Stratford Shakespeare Festival

I have been absent due a trip to the Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Ontario. I saw the Merchant of Venice, which was amazing. "If you prick us, do we not bleed?" Truer words were never spoken by Shylock, who was played by Graham Greene (Kicking Bird in Dances with Wolves/Mr. Crabby Tree in Dudley the Dragon, which was the greatest kids' show ever!!). However, the part you are probably most interested in is the costuming. I will not disappoint! I took a tour of Stratford's costume warehouse, which is home to around 50 000 magnificent stage costumes.

A shoe display. Those clown shoes are outrageous!! They were originally conventional mens' dress shoes but were built upon by professional cobblers.

My hilarious gay tour guide named Rod mentioned how and why the Stratford Festival spends a lot of money on vodka, syringes and condoms every year. The vodka is used to take body odour out of costumes. The syringes are used for precise gluing of stage props. The actors' microphones are put in condoms to keep them dry, because if they get wet from the actors' sweat, they will malfunction. It's all fascinating, isn't it? Of course the trip would not be complete without trying on some costumes for myself.

This costume was way too big so I had hold it up in the back. The massive skirt was fun nonetheless. I'm not sure what production it was from but it reminds me of the Sound of Music.

I feel like Romeo in this poofy Courtier's jacket, which fit surprisingly well. Why oh why couldn't I have taken it home with me?

Paging Major General

Check out this lovely pair of shoes I snagged for $5 at a secondhand designer shop.

I love them! They are quirky and military at the same time. Very slick. Any suggestions on what would look good with them? I think they would look cute with a pleated navy uniform skirt and my gray ribbed tights, but I like to keep an open mind.

MyStyleDiary: Double Trouble

If you haven't guessed that I adore crazy, madcap style yet then the synapses in your brain might not be functioning properly. Babooshka clearly defies any sort of convention that has been placed on "fashion" since the beginning of "fashion" itself, and I totally respect that. Her quote even says "Fashion is overrated. Experimenting is so much more fun".

I love the blue plaid skirt mixed with the earthy green cardigan. My best friend always says "blue and green should never be seen" and I tend to agree, but there's always an exception to the rule and this is definitely it.

I never thought that wearing a ladylike skirt with checkerboard Vans could be paired so effectively. Even the utterly bizarre scarf tied around her waist is cool!

The headscarf and skirt are both wonderfully 'granny-chic', but the hot pink sweater brings the outfit to a whole new dimension. Wham-bam thank-you maam!

Selinaoolala reminds me of a much cooler Lily Allen. In my opinion, Lily Allen's fashion sense is really lame. Her outfits have potential but are completely ruined by those awful Nike hi-tops. Hi-tops are clunky and unfortunate looking. Luckily, Selinaoolala does not pair her cute dresses with hi-tops that only a mother could love.

This is girlish and cute. I like it. I probably wouldn't wear it, but I like it nonetheless.

Holy badass metallic dress, Batman! I love metallics, I love dresses. My brain is making the logical conclusion to adore this dress.

Simple Shoes

I was really disenheartened when I saw a girl wearing a "Live Green, Support Your Earth" shirt that she got at Giant Tiger. The earth would've been so much better off if you hadn't bought that bloody shirt! I've already posted on my dislike of those shirts but today I'm offering an alternative. www.simpleshoes.com is a website where you can buy quality shoes and backpacks that are made of natural or reused materials. The shoes for sale aren't exactly Christian Louboutins, but they're far more stylish than orthopaedic shoes. In my opinion at least.

I think these Mary Janes are cute, the pattern reminds me of the Patrick Robinson for Target collection. The soles are made out of old tires, the lining is bamboo and the outer is cotton. For $85, I'm definitely putting them on my Christmas wishlist.

The backpack isn't so stylish, but it looks like a good blank canvas for customization. I'd love to get my hands on it and put pins and patches all over it. Since it has a cushioned inside for laptops, it would be a great buy for University-goers. Looks like this is going on my Christmas wishlist too!

Kate Moss and Irina Lazareanu wear moccasin boots...you should too! Even if they look bizarre in the picture. These boots are like Ikea furniture, because you have to assemble them yourself! Yes, they even come with an instructional video on how to sew them. Wicked. I already have moccasins, so these poor folk will not be included in my wishlist.

Is it too early to be making a Christmas wishlist?

Spider Webb from the Horrors!!!!

Okay, just kidding. That would ruin my life. But my hair is sort of in an ear-length bob now instead of a chin-length bob. It's very Art School Confidential, hopefully not bordering on dyke-y. Think Anna Karina (pictured below, stolen from stupidcupcake), not Spider Webb.

I could only wish to look as hot as she does with the same hair, though.

Obligatory Fashion Week Post

The only collection from S/S 08 that has really caught my eye so far was Anna Sui. Spring is always filled with annoying pastels, so I applaud Anna for not falling for any of that crap. I love the "wacko woman goes to work" feel of it all. Especially the short, colourful wigs on all the models! This collections is just so much fun! Spring fashion should be about having fun with fashion, and not just about wearing white before labour day. That's lame.


I see Anna Sui is keeping in with this "New-Grave" trend everyone (including me) is talking about. Yes, long live bondage, coffins and the black electrical tape this dress was most likely constructed from.

This deranged prom dress is Marc Jacobs, not Anna Sui. Another demonstration on how goth can be glorious. Despite its lack of colour compared to Anna Sui, this dress is just as much fun as a barrel of monkeys too! (Barrel of monkeys? What the hell am I thinking?)

Unfortunately, everything else in the Marc Jacobs collection was really boring.
I'd better stop writing before I say anything about barrels of monkeys again. That could be dangerous.

YSL Pencil Skirt

I've been infected by back-to-school germs, but I'm still enormously happy. Shopping tends to do that to me.

You see, I bought a YSL Rive Gauche (circa Tom Ford) skirt for $75 that elates me. It's a lovely pencil skirt with bows on it and I love it. I was almost not going to buy it because it poofed out at the front, but then I realized I could just wear it backwards and let my butt fill out the poof! There was just no way I could give up an Yves St. Laurent pencil skirt with bows on it...

You should also be noticing a gorgeous pair of Easy Spirit spectator pumps that I bought for $25 - a bargain, no? I luckily found myself a pair of high waisted pants that don't even make me look like I'm wearing a diaper! The leg width is perfect ass well. Loose, but not wide-leg. Straight, but not skinny. For some extra whimsy, I paired this very sophisticated outfit with a ridiculously huge bow tie that I found in my school's music room.


I am weird, but my wardrobe now has three dashes of added class.

Friggin; Misshapes

Another random party picture

Hot off the heels of their new book, there is a rumour going around that the Misshapes are going to stop having their Saturday night parties. I hope its not, but don't want to live in denial either. I guess that according to them, its better to burn out than to fade away. Haven't the Misshapes achieved total world domination now anyways? They are all over Gawker.com and Leigh has been profiled in Vogue a number of times. It's as if they don't want to sell out, which is crap. They do corporate parties. I will certainly miss wading through the ridiculous party pictures every week. Looking at pictures of beautiful people high on glamourous drugs was so deliciously naughty. I suppose I'll just have to order the book and mourn.

The Clash

The idea of wearing a scuzzy t-shirt and classy pants has always intrigued me. In fact, I got a pair of wide-leg pinstripe pants and wide-leg glen plaid pants custom made for me last Christmas. I was planning on rocking them will all my band t-shirts, but it never looks good. Instead of looking like a nonchalant lady, I look like a fool because:
1. I'm wearing a baggy Bad Religion shirt with baggy pants.
2. Shoes. The outfit looks lame if I wear Converse and even more lame if I wear pointy black kitten heels.
3. Wide-leg pants are meant for Amazonian goddesses, not a petite girl of 5"5, like me.

The outfit is meant to confuse other people, but it just ends up confusing me. I would probably look much better if the pants AND the shirt weren't both so baggy. Dangnabbit, I seriously hate wide-leg pants. I don't care how cool they are. Well, that was my rant for the day. It just pisses me off how a Misshapes girl can look good in this and I can't. Perhaps it's only a matter of suspenders...

Day 1: School

The first day of school, always a trial. I've already graduated high school but figured I'd take a 5th year because that's what most confused, undecided teens do. It's kind of surreal. I have no credits to get, I have nothing to prove to anyone, I am purely there to relax for a year before I head on to University. Even though I have nothing to prove, I still tried to dress nicely. I wore my gray sack dress, purple tweed kitten heels and added charcoal gray ribbed tights to make it more autumn-appropriate.

Nothing was going on in the jewelery department, save for my Sid and Nancy earrings bought from Etsy. I doubt you can really see Sid Vicious clearly in the picture, but I assure you he is there.

I always thought that teenagers made a big effort to look good on the first day of school, but most people don't look as if they went shopping at all. I continue to swim in a sartorial sea of Hollister, American Eagle and Garage Jeans. I'm surprised my style hasn't suffocated amongst it.




P.S.: Isn't Ian Curtis (Joy Division) the dreamiest guy ever? It's such a shame he's dead.
